The intradermal skin test is the official test for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis (EU Council Directive 64/432/CEE). Several factors can affect the performance of the test: the reagents currently in use (biological potency of the Protein Purified Derivatives, PPD), the equipment (clippers, callipers, syringes),
human factors (training, interpretation), animals (breed and age), weather conditions and the inoculation site. Some of them are inherent to the test and cannot be controlled, but some can be limited. One of the main objectives of the European Union Reference Laboratory (EU-RL) for Bovine Tuberculosis is to study these factors for determining how they affect the outcome of the test. The PPDs, human factors and the position will be discussed
