The role of wild fauna in the emergent diseases
Oral communication in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
Zoonotic emergent infectious diseases have become one of the most serious threats for public
health. Approximately 75 % of the diseases that have occurred during the last two decades
originated in the wild fauna. SARS, West Nile virus or influenza recent epidemics, that will be
treated in this article, show the importance of emerging diseases in the whole world and the relevant
role of the veterinary services. Monitoring these diseases requires a multidisciplinary work team,
with professionals formed in medicine, epidemiology, virology, zoology and veterinary sciences,
because of the gre…

Development of an epidemiological model for the assessment of the spread of the Classical Swine fever in Segovia
Conference in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
The aim of this study was to develop an epidemiological model to analyze the spread patterns
of the classical swine fever virus in Segovia and to assess the areas and farm types with more
epidemiological risk. The model used was a state-transition stochastic and spatial model. As a
result it was obtained a mean (95% IP) of 28 (1-98) infected farms, 15 (0-70) depopulated and
71 (2-279) quarantined farms in the protection zone. The average duration of the epidemic
was 63 (1-168) days and the average time to detection was 14 (6-39) days. The areas at higher
risk of spread of CSF in Segovia …

Waking up of Classical Swine Fever
Oral communication in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
African Swine Fever (ASF) is one of the most important infectious diseases of the pigs;
that also in the last years has undergoing an expansion in its distribution. The main objective
of this work has been to perform an epidemiological analysis of the disease evolution, that
contributes to understand its epidemiology and helps in the revision of preventive and control
measures of ASF.
The analysis of the notified ASF-outbreaks from January 1998 to march 2009 confirms
the expansion of the virus to eight new countries and a significant (70% outbreaks notified in
2007 and 2008) increase of…

Ebola-Reston Virus. Pig, a new host?
Conference in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
Ebola-Reston is species of the Ebola virus that was identified for the first time in 1989 in the
United States. Several outbreaks have happened since then, affecting monkeys and humans in
contact with these, without producing any disease or death in the latter. At the end of 2008
this virus was detected for the first time in pigs of two farms in the Philippines.
The main objective of this work has been to analyze the unique outbreak of Ebola-Reston in
pigs, and to perform an epidemiological analysis that could help to raise hypothesis about the
origin of the virus.. The study of this out…

Molecular study of a new strain of cetacean morbillivirus from a shortfin pilot whale
Conference in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is the most pathogenic virus in cetaceans. It includes three
strains whose names refer to the species of odontocete from which it was initially isolated:
Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), Porpoise morbillivirus (PMV) and Pilot Whale morbillivirus
(PWMV). The aim of this work was to complete a molecular characterization of a new strain
of CeMV obtained from the brain of a short finned pilot whale stranded dead around Canary
Islands with lesions compatible with morbilliviral disease. Phylogenetic trees including
sequences of all the morbillivirus species have shown…

Application of the thermography for the valuation of the fertility in eggs of Falco naumanni
Oral communication in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
Usually the evaluation of eggs fertility is done with ovoscopy. The principal inconvenient is the need to manipulate the egg, this prevents its application in wildlife. This is why it was studied to substitute this method for termography, analizing the termic patterns of 190 eggs of Falco naumanni. The obtained results show that thermography allows us to differentiate the fertile eggs, from
unfertile, and aborted ones thanks to its different termic patters and cooling speeds since 3 days after the lay. Its possible to use it both during the artificial incubation and in nature with different e…

“Swine flu”. Human cases due to H1N1 Influenza virus, an issue that so far only affects Public Health
VISAVET Outreach Journal publish this article
Swine Influenza (also known as “swine flu”) is an acute respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A Influenza virus. Its characteristic symptoms are cough, respiratory problems, fever and depression, and although the disease usually has a sudden start animals rapidly recover from the disease. Typically, mortality levels are very low. Swine influenza was first described as an animal disease during the 1918-1919 pandemic known as “Spanish flu”…

Application of thermography for the study of koalas
Conference in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
There has been a study of thermography in koalas to establish the anatomic point of reference of the general temperature of this species, the normal thermal patters depend on environment temperature and the different changes during the females heat period, the
gestation and the development period of the joey at the marsupium. Also an inflammation of superficial nodes and a chronic lameness were studied. The results indicate that the eye is a good reference point of the general temperature due to its stability and easy measurement.
It has also been observed an increase of temperature in the ar…

Impact of vaccination in the control of the bluetongue virus
Conference in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
The bluetongue virus (BTV) is a reemerging worldwide disease transmitted by insects of the
genus Culicoides that affects domestic and some wild ruminants. Currently, it is a disease of
great importance in Europe due to the economic losses it causes. Since 2002 in Spain, there
have been outbreaks of 4 different serotypes of BTV, each with a different behaviour in terms
of distribution, population and pathogenicity. Control in Spain has been possible through the
use of different prophylactic measures, but the main tool for the eradication is vaccination.
The aim of this work is to assess t…

Clinical study of a trial on VLP vaccine for bluetongue virus serotypes 1 & 1+4 in sheep
Oral communication in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
Bluetongue Virus disease is an infectous disease submitted to a sanitary control composed by
several measures of prevention, and one of these measures is the vaccination of the sensible
species. In the development of vaccines opposite to this disease, a new trend is the production
of polyvalent vaccines by VLP`s technology (virus like particles). This work has had as aim to
value by clinical survey, 2 VLP vaccines, for serotypes 1 and 1+4. The results confirm the
lack of fever, clinical signs and pathologic injuries in vaccinated animals opposite to control
animals, which indicates that …

Cytokines gene expression detection by real time RT-PCR in sheep
Oral communication in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
Cytokines are protein molecules that cells from the immune system secrete in response to
immune stimulation. There are different techniques to study their production and their action
on individuals. This study consists of the development of a real time RT-PCR method for the
detection of the expression of mRNA coding for six cytokines (TNF-α, IFNγ, IL-4, IL2, IL-
10, IL-12). The preliminary results were obtained from the study of lymphocites stimulated
with Con A and LPS, showing the detection of ARNm, IL-4, IL-2, IFNγ and TNF-α, IL-12,
IL-10, respectively. Its subsequ…

Evaluation of the antibody production of a trial on VLP vaccines for bluetongue 1 and 4 serotypes
Conference in VIII Congreso de Ciencias Veterinarias y Biomedicas
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate by a competitive ELISA test the VP7
antibodies in response to VLPs vaccines for bluetongue serotypes 1 & 1+4, and after the virus
challenge, to assess the humoral immune response produced by these VLPs. The three
vaccinated groups showed positive results 35 days after the vaccination. However, in non
vaccinated animals antibodies were not detected before day 10 post virus challenge.
The presence of antibodies in vaccinated animals implies that VLP Vaccines are able to
stimulate a humoral response…

Risk assessment and cost-effectiveness analysis of Aujeszky´s disease virus introduction through breeding and fattening pig movements into Spain
Investigation published in Preventive veterinary medicine
Movement of infected animals is considered the most likely route of Aujeszky´s disease virus (ADV) introduction into free areas and the main obstacle to eradicating Aujeszky´s disease (AD) in those areas, which have achieved a low prevalence (>0 and </=10%) status. For this reason, the Spanish AD control and eradication program has established measures to enhance security in animal movements in an attempt to protect areas with free or low prevalence status; however, no studies have quantified the effectiveness of the current or alternative ADV introduction prevention measures. We perform…

Moraxella pluranimalium sp. nov., isolated from animal specimens
International journal of systematic and evolutionary microbiology publish this investigation article
Four unusual Gram-negative, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive, coccus-shaped bacteria isolated from one sheep and three pigs were characterized using phenotypic and molecular genetic methods. On the basis of cellular morphology and biochemical criteria, the isolates were tentatively assigned to the genus Moraxella, although the organisms did not appear to correspond to any recognized species. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated that the isolates represent a novel subline within the genus Moraxella. The most closely related species in phylogenetic terms was Moraxella cun…

Risk of introduction of H5N1 HPAI from Europe to Spain by wild water birds in autumn
Transboundary and emerging diseases publish this investigation article
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 continues to circulate across Eurasia and Africa since its unprecedented rapid spread in 2005. Diffusion by wild bird movements has been evidenced in the European Union in 2006 and 2007. Spain is an important wintering quarter for aquatic birds from northern latitudes, so identifying the critical areas and species where an outbreak is prone to happen is necessary. This work presents an assessment of the risk of introduction of H5N1 HPAI in Spain by aquatic wild birds estimating a relative risk value per province. For this purpose, an assess…

Rapid and sensitive detection of African horse sickness virus by real-time PCR
Investigation article published in Research in veterinary science
A highly sensitive and specific TaqMan-MGB real-time RT-PCR assay has been developed and standardised for the detection of African horse sickness virus (AHSV). Primers and MGB probe specific for AHSV were selected within a highly conserved region of genome segment 7. The robustness and general application of the diagnostic method were verified by the detection of 12 AHSV isolates from all of the nine serotypes. The analytical sensitivity ranged from 0.001 to 0.15 TCID(50) per reaction, depending on the viral serotype. Real-time PCR performance was preliminarily assessed by analysing a panel of…
